The importance of clean drinking water

In this article, we tell you all about the importance of clean drinking water for cows.

Besides feed, the availability of sufficient and clean drinking water is of great importance to the cow. It contributes greatly to optimal milk production and health. However, drinking water quality is often not as it should be. This directly results in a lower feed intake and affects the cow's well-being.

High-productive cows drink on average about 100 to 200 litres of water per day. You will see that most cows look for a drinking facility immediately after leaving the milking facility. You also see that cows prefer to drink first before they eat. Therefore, we recommend a drinking facility of 15 cm per cow. It is also important that the drinking facilities are easily accessible and that they can be used without disturbance.

How do I keep the drinking facility clean?

You can easily do this by visual assessment and consistent water testing. First of all, it is important to assess the source of the pipe systems. Perhaps the cause of the contamination can be found here.

The drinking facility is placed at a height of 70 centimetres. It is recommended that the water level should never be below 20 centimetres for optimal drinking comfort. It is also important to check them structurally and clean them at least once a week.
